Colorado Placers and Placering (Paper or Digital Download)

Gold panning is a great pastime. With some practice you can develop technique and pan cleanly and quickly. Panning often takes you to beautiful country and, if you wish, into remote country. It’s great to see a trail of colors in the bottom of the pan! And it’s fun! Finding a rich pocket of gravel with gold is not done often, but it does happen.

The old time prospectors didn’t find it all. For instance: In the summer of 1990, Shane Dodge found the “Turtle Nugget” at the Pennsylvania Mountain placer in Park County. The nugget – which weighs eight troy ounces – is on display at the Denver Museum of Natural History. It proves that there are some good finds still left.

Placers are naturally concentrated deposits of rock debris in which gold, or other heavy minerals have accumulated. This book contains maps and directions to some of the best placer deposits of the state.
