In Kern County, a few miles northwest of the old gold mining town of Randsburg, lies Goler Canyon in the heart of Californias El Paso Mountains, a region well-known to lost mine hunters during the last century. It was here, in Goler Canyon, that John Goler, a German immigrant, found and lost an extremely rich gold mine in 1867.

According to Thomas Penfield, Goler found and lost his first gold mine in Death Valley in 1849. What little is known of Golers rich Death Valley find comes from the chronicles of William Manly, one of the original 49ers who crossed Death Valley on his way to the California gold rush of 1849.
