The late Thomas Penfield said, Theres treasure everywhere, and I dont dispute him; but some parts of the country just seem to get more than their fair share. Like powerful magnets, certain special places seem to pull in treasure stories almost; it seems, by magic.
Hot Springs, Ark., in Garland County is one of these places. Millionaires, gangsters, highwaymen, and road agents including the Jesse James Gang have all left their treasure mark in the Hot Springs vicinity. Even the Johnny Appleseed of American treasure hunting, Bernarr MacFadden, is said to have hidden one of his now famous ammo cans (containing $240,000 in cash) in the Ouachita Mountains overlooking Hot Springs.
