On July 6, 1779, the sheriff of Essex County, Massachusetts, swung his leg over the rail of the brigantine "Defense" and strode aft to the quarterdeck to meet Capt. John Edmonds. His mission of that summer day was a bit unusual.

The vessel had just been completely fitted out for a cruise against the Quebec merchant fleet, and Capt. Edmonds was anxious to begin the long trip to the mouth of the St. Lawrence. The Sheriff's call ended all that.

The Defense was newly-built, of 170 tons, and had 16 six-pound cannon. Her owners, Andrew and John Cabot, Larkin and Israel Thorndike, and Elias Haskett Derby, hoped to reap extensive profits from her first cruise.
