Billy the Kid, who claimed to have killed 21 men by his 21st birthday, was one of the last and most famous desperadoes of the American southwest. He was born in New York City on Nov. 23, 1859. The first record of him is as a witness to the marriage of his widowed mother, Catherine McCarty, to a William Antrim in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he signed the church register as Henry McCarty. The family then settled in Silver City, New Mexico.

Billys mother died on Sept. 19, 1874, and he began living in the alleys and saloons. In 1877, he shot and killed a drunken blacksmith in a bar at Fort Grant, Arizona. He became a fugitive after the killing and went to Lincoln County, New Mexico, changing his name to William H. Bonney.
