The Perdido River divides western Florida and Alabama. For years there was no ferry crossing the river, but, in 1815, Henry Allen Nunez established one that became very lucrative. When a road was built connecting Pensacola and Blakely, a stagecoach line started, increasing his profits.

Over the years, Nunez grew quite wealthy. It was rumored he hid his gold and silver in caches near the ferry landing. He continued to operate the ferry during the Civil War, although he was growing old. Then the area was occupied by Federal troops. They heard of Nunez's buried fortune, so they went to his home and demanded his money.
