"Three bucks," the dealer says, looking you in the eye. He snaps your 1844 Seated Liberty half on the glass counter and turns away to file some proof sets as though the matter no longer interests him. You look at the coin, remembering the thrill you had when you found it. It was after a day of hunting in a mosquito-ridden field under a scorching sun. You couldn't get over how clean it looked. The date was sharp and both sides were completely readable. But if it's worth only $3, why sell it? It's old enough. You would have thought it'd bring more. He's certainly asking more for the newer coins he has on display. Is he trying to cheat you, or have you just found a poor specimen? You decide you had better hang on to it until you talk to some knowledgeable THers.
