The stagecoach to Los Angeles was being loaded in front of the red brick Bodie Hotel. One of the richest gold camps in California, Bodie was in its prosperous heyday, and a strongbox containing $25,000 in gold was hoisted aboard while the four passengers sat waiting indifferently. In those days gold in such quantities was a common sight in that part of California.

Soon the creaking coach with its passengers, freight, driver and shotgun guard was bumping along the dusty road leading out of the camp. Upon emerging from rolling, grassy hills, the travelers spied Mono Lake on the left. The towering snow-capped Sierra Nevada Range appeared painted on the sky ahead of them.
