The California Daily Alta of February 21, 1851, tells an unusual story of an odd gold coin.

Hexagonal gold pieces, the paper reported, manufactured under an Act of Congress that appointed a United States Assay Office in California, and made under the supervision of the United States Assayer, were first issued yesterday.
