According to legends, pirates often buried their stolen gold, silver and jewels in secret hiding places.
Captain Kidd buried treasure on Gardiner’s Island, New York. When he was caught and jailed, this booty was recovered by the British and sent to London.
Blackbeard supposedly buried vast amounts of gold and silver near Ocracoke, Inlet, North Carolina.
Many expeditions have searched on Cocos Island, off the coast of Costa Rica, for the lost loot of Lima, Peru, reportedly buried by the pirate Benito Bonito of the ship Bloody Sword. This treasure is estimated to be worth more than $65 million.
