Among the historic mining camps of southern California's San Bernardino Mountains there is a gold mine of immense richness that has been discovered, lost, rediscovered - and lost again. The lost mine's location can be narrowed to within three miles along the twisting course of Van Duzen Canyon, which connects Holcomb Valley with Big Bear Valley. In 1860, a man named Van Duzen, working in the canyon with a partner, attracted attention to himself in barrooms and trading posts by the size and obvious weight of his gold poke.
