In the northern end of North Island New Zealand, Heritage Gold Executive
Director Peter Atkinson stares down into the pristine Karangahake Gorge. Below was the 120-year-old Talisman Mine within the Kaimai Forest Park.
At one time the mine produced a million ounces of gold and three million ounces of silver.
But now, with the price of gold skyrocketing, the New Zealand government has issued its first mining permit for North Island in 20 years. Atkinson plans to bring in Chinese mining groups to assist in narrow vein mining techniques.
Gold was found just to the north in the town of Waihi in 1878, which witnessed the opening of the Martha Mine.
