Slowly, the morning sky began to lighten on the unnamed river in Texas. Camped in the open on the high western bank were 24 men. There were no guards posted - none was believed needed in March of 1801, since there were virtually no people living there.

The native Indians were on friendly terms with the leader of the men encamped there, one Phillip Nolan. Since early 1800, he had traveled many times from his home in Natchez, Mississippi, into Texas to buy and trap horses. Old records show that he generally purchased the animals with large amounts of money.
