After the discovery of gold in Colorado in 1858 and 59, hoards of people descended upon the Rocky Mountains. During this time period, wagon and stagecoach roads were crudely developed to meet the necessary transportation requirements. After the Civil War an even greater influx of people resulted in a network of additional roads.
Researching the history of this transportation system during those early years provided me with an interesting wintertime activity and future metal detecting sites.
