During the 1860s, an old man known as Trapper Sam made many trips into Denver, Colorado, bringing with him the skin of animals he had trapped just north of the town of Breckenridge. Sam also brought with him lots of raw gold nuggets, and had a strange hobby, carving small wooden spades by the dozens to pass away the hours in his mountain cabin.

As Sam carved the spades with his sheath knife, he talked freely to his friends about the best locations to trap beaver, mountain cats and bear. But he turned as mute as one of his wooden spades when someone asked about the source of his gold. He said to his friends, Where I get my gold is my business, and mine alone.
