Wells Fargo stagecoaches rolled through the West for half a century carrying gold bullion, gold coins and special mail, such as payroll monies. All together, there were 378 robberies and robbery attempts. There is hardly a county in the West that does not have a tale of buried bandit loot that came from a Wells Fargo holdup. By the time of the Civil War, most everyone was aware of Wells Fargo and the trouble the company had with robbers; in fact, the Dime Novel was born of yarns told about Wells Fargo holdups.
