I am still in the research mode. Have not completely made up my mind which MD is best for me! All are so interesting when reading the field tests. Still looking at the Garrett Ace 350 and maybe the AT Pro. Heres the question:  Is anyone familiar with the Automax V4 offered through Kellyco's website? Is it a good product or just so-so? $45.00 with the Ace 350 or free with the AT Pro.Being that I am just getting into this hobby I need everything and seeing the usefulness of a pinpointer I definitely want this as part of my metal detecting addition. If you have opinions of other pinpointers I'm all ears. This is a great website, I really enjoy reading all the information  by everyone. Any inputs are appreciated...  Thanks again     Diggin in

Detectore and inpointers

I have been away from the hobby for years, too busy building a home and family to spend time the and money. I decided to get back into the game but technology has passed me by so I have had to do a lot of research to catch up. I still have an older " Whites 5900DI/PRO" and it is still a good machine but after looking at he market I decided on the "Garrett ACE 350". I love this little machine. It has every bit as much search power as the Whites, it's smaller and easier to swing and the controls are great. The video that come with the 350 shows the Garrett pinpointer in a demo and after comparing it with the others I found on the market, I think thats the way to go.

Go Garrett

Just two cents, but the garrett pointer is the way to go.  It is rugged and compact and will get you digging in the right direction quickly.

Good Idea...

When I do buy my Metal detector I will give this a try. Sounds very logical and practical let alone a cost saving idea. Thanks for the info, this is one hobby that can become totally addictive. I suppose it's all about the "finds" ? Reading articles and understanding the overall metal detecting process is so easy in concept yet when you read all the tips and tricks and the bottom line is experience... just as you pointed out.      Thanks again, I made a note on this and will give it  a try.        diggin in

Did you know...

Did you know that the coil is just as sensitive ABOVE as it is BELOW?
You can set your detector down on he ground and use wo hands for your passing OVER the coil.
Grab your handful of dirt and pass it over he coil. If it beeps, pour half into your other hand and see which beeps. Dump the dead one and again divide in half and see which one beeps. By using two hands, it goes much faster and is very simple.
Saves you having to lift he coil to wave the other hand under it.
Hope this helps you to recover faster and find more treasures!

Pinpointer artical

Thanks for the input about the V4, after doing some research about pinpointers I have found  it just appears to be way too big. It's size would be a bit of a hassle to carry in a pouch as well. I found a good article on this website under "Extended Field Tests"  (for subscribers only) that offers a good comparison of the Garrett Pro-pointer and the Detector pro Pistol pinpointer. Very good comparison of the two units. The Detector Pro may have a slight edge over the Pro-Pointer in depth findings but also carries a much larger size to achieve this, more expensive as well.  I like the Dectector Pros features but I don't like the size... I like the Pro-Pointer for it's compactness and the holster. Just my thoughts, at any rate it's a good article to read.            diggin in

Automax V4 review

It was a throw-in with my Safari a year ago. I find it bulky to carry and mediocre in recovery and have gone as far as friction taping various coins just "off" of the hot-spot to increase sensitivity to coins/jewelry (web search to find the videos using a coin held against shaft moving from away to closing in to picking up the hot-spot) . Until I upgrade to a pro-pointer, I'll actually continue to pass handfuls of dirt below the coil checking if the coin is in that handful or the next. It's more effective, IMO .   GL

Pinpointers

Thank you for the response to my question about pinpointers. After  viewing the video on the Garrett website it was easy to see it would be the best choice. The automax v4 is too large and tuning for pinpointing seems odd.  I'm going with the advice from the three of you. I really like the compact size of the Garrett pinpointer and the fact that it can be cleaned under running water sells itself. Thanks again, diggin in

I agree with the other two replies, the Garrett pinpointer is the way to go. I've beendetecting for 7 years and just in the last year finally invested in a pinpointer as well.Believe me with the Garrett you won't regret it. I know I'm having great success with mineand wonder what I ever did without it.

Pinpointer

I agree with jaybird. The other pinpointer's are bulky and a hassle to use. Plus they don't last long because the switches always stop working.  The Garrett pinpointer is excellent. Easy to slide in and out of holster. I wash mine in water to clean it. I have had it for about 1 and 1/2 yrs and still going strong. Good luck with whatever you choose and start hunting. Cliff

I have been in this great

I have been in this great hobby for more than 35 years and have owned many detectors and pinpointers. My pinpointer of choice because of it's excellent depth, turn on and go ability and ruggedness is the Garrett's Propointer. It is pricey compared to the cheaper models but worth every penny in my opinion. I enjoy helping new comers to the hobby. Good luck with whatever you choose.HHJay
