I'm a Newbee, but I want to start out with a descent detector. I have a line on a slightly used Garrett Crossfire II Deepseeker GTAx 750 and a slightly used Viper Trident Hybrid, both priced the same. I will be using the detector on land and fresh water beaches in MN in the summer hunting for coins and jewelry, and in NV and AZ in the winter to locate Gold nuggets in the desert, and will be using it a lot. Also would these units benefit from a Hot Head search coil. I want the unit to be dependable and light. I would appreciate feed back from those who have used or own either unit. Thank You, t-bone

I would not recommend either

I would not recommend either of those for nugget hunting as they are not sensitive enough for the small nuggets. For nugget hunting you need a detector with a higher operating frequency and one with adjustable ground balancing to handle the mineralization you will encounter.
If you want a detector to do both types of hunting and do it well look at the new Fisher Gold Bug SE ($499), White's MXT ($719), Tesoro Lobo ST ($719) or Minelab Eureka ($900). These prices are the discounted prices most dealers would sell the units for new.
The Fisher and White's have visual and depth indicator screens. The Tesoro and Minelab are strictly audio response.
