For more than 20 years I have swung the treasure sniffer on beaches on both coast and the gulf in the USA.  This past month of June we vacationed in Maryland.  We had just set up for great day at the beach on Asateaque Island.  I began as usual, respectful of sun bathers and swimers, to swing my BH over the sand.  I had gone only about 20 feet when a life guard blew the whistle and told me to stop.  She said that you can only metal dectect after September of each year, not during the summer months.  Sadly I put my gear away and got out my kite and had fun flying the same.

Leave the Detector Home

I received the same treatment at a local lake, except that the beach had not opened yet. A guard told me detecting was not allowed without a permit. When I went to the headquarters of the park, they told me they no longer issue permits. When my wife & I went back to the lake I told the guard what the office had told me. All he could say is that the "part time" staff were uninformed and if I started swinging my detector he was autherized to confiscate my equipment. Not wanting to give up my White's detector, I simply walked away. I wish these people would get their "information" together!!!Be careful out there!!!

I saw screw that life

I saw screw that life guard...thats crap...theres nothing wrong with what you were doing. You were simply enjoying the god given right to find treasure....dont let that jerk get ya down. We will all find people like that which will discourage your metal detecting...you get up, dust yourself off, and continue metal detecting... that was just some high and mighty person who thought he needed to flex his lifeguarding, minimum wage muscle......screw em!

Night Stroll

I don't see a reason in the world why you could not take a night stroll up and down the beach.  There would be few to none beach goers, and you could bet that the life guard will have better things to do.

Whistle Blower

That's OK Jim. If nobody hunts that beach at night I would sure mark my calender for the first day of Sept. What a day that would be. I live in south Texas so it's a little to far to go. Especially  if people are sneaking in at night and getting all the goods. Cliff
