I am starting to setup my detector and I have a newbie question. It tells me to us a zinc penny minted after 1982? why is the date important. Also I do have a one but it's minted way before 1982. (1943)please help as I am anxious to swing over my back yard !!Thank you

1982 penny

Prior to 1982 the penny was made of copper. During 1982 the composition was changed to zinc with a copper coating. There are eight different pennies made in 1982 when you consider the copper/zinc composition, mint marks and the large and small dates of each mint mark. To test your detector on a zinc penny use one minted after 1982. The 1943 penny was made of steel with a zinc coating. I hope this helps you out. Pops
