SS merida
Amazing how little is known about this ship the SS merida. She is occasionally dived for trinkets and the like and tall tales abound, and certain self proclaimed scholars state this and that as if it were writ and they know nothing. The occasional diving junkets come up with junk-- or the equivalent of nothing. Everyone has a theory, but those theories are like the pieces of debris and junk brought up now and again. Lots of stories and interest fades in and out like the morning and evening tides. New result what is known is nothing other than that readily available to any good researcher--and there are precious few of those with the persistance and tenacity to get at the root of the story as in the truth of the story--accurate history deduced from hard facts.
There is nobody in the world that knows what i know because i took the time to find out the pertinent facts and obtained information NOT written here and there. I was able to assess the validity of hearsay and hard facts--indisputable facts--and most of the important information has not a thing to do with the ship-- the ship itself plays into the story later on and its main function was not to divert from regular scheduling.
The merida was the Queen mary of her day in America, a coastal freighter, cargo and passengers on regular rounds and schedules, a grand and reliable ship with a new jersey Captain who is not in his grave in New jersey.
One or two buffs say they will write a book on the merida-- what kind of book? One that will tell what everyone already knows-- that she carried regular mexican silver to an assay location on 13th street a stones throw from the JP Morgan location? That she did indeed carry gold for international payments--as gold was not allowed to circulate in mexico--- sure there are alot of facts and trivia, but that certainly does not make for an interesting story and what their book may just tell is a prosaic story of a maritime collison at sea with no casualties and some alleged this and alleged that--twice told tales. By their reckoning the final chapter of the merida will never be told; why? because they know nothing about the real story then and now and I can assure you research on the ship will produce nothing; the real research is an adventure in itself and it occurs as an extra martime quest. By the way the emeralds referred to in a brief article in this site were NOT on display in mexico City---mocks ups of those emeralds were on display--forget about the emeralds and the alleged maximillian's treasure--all bogus. But was there and is there a treasure mworthy of serious consideration--now that is a question whose answer is arrived at after in depth research, travel, adventure, and yes danger. But a clear conclusion can be drawn as to the true nature and disposition of the oft spoken of treasure of the SS Merida
