Hi All,
I found this hunk of "stuff" in a field a few days back. It is magnetic, heavy and very hard. I tried to scratch it with a nail but it looked like the nail transfered to the piece of whatever it is. Any ideas as to what it is? If nothing else it makes a nice paperweight.

stuff

try useing a magnet on it.if a magnet sticks to it you have a good chance it being a meteorite.there are web sites that can make an i.d. of your piece and show good pictures of meteorites to help you

"hunk of stuff "

If there are no soft spots where you can rub and get rust all over your hand, like you would with an old rusted bolt. Then I would say it's a meteorite. Cliff

Steel Slag or Meteorite

Jim, looks like a great find. Here is my suggestion. Do a google search for meteorite sites. See if where you found it is listed on any of the sites. This may take a little time, but will be really worth it. Most sites will have "Question & Answer" section. Once you have an idea, take it to a reputable person like a museum or meteorite expert for evaluation. Make sure you have a find location, I always GPS my finds so I can go back for more. Since some meteorites are very valuable $$$$$, don't accept any offers untill you have a positive ID. Good luck and please keep us posted on your findings!!!!!!!!!!!!

magnetic rock

yep looks like something from the "twilight zone " to me too, maybe take it to your local rock expert, like a museum director, they should be able to figure it out.
~pretty intresting find !

Hey Jim,

Sure looks like a meteorite. Hard to tell for sure from the photo. Don't throw it away.
