Traveling with a Metal Detector
I travel a lot for my company, does anyone have suggestions on traveling by plane with a detector? How to keep it safe and not make the inspectors call the bomb squad?
I take mine on vacation all the time I have a small travel bag with wheels on it. And I have taken it with me and put it up in the overhead bens or I have checked it in and picked it up in baggage I have not had any problem. we have taken it on three cruises as well and take it of the ship at every stop. with no problems I hope that this helps
Found a lot of mexican coins and some American coins. The other things I found I let my wife wear home for security. Cliff
Cool , we a planning on going there early next year and i was going to check for any restriction on detectors.Did you find any thing?
I took my water detector and travel scoop to Cancun last year. Broke down the detector and scoop and put in luggage. Told security I had detector and scoop in luggage. They said no problem and thanks for telling them. Cliff
Thanks Everyone! These ideas are VERY helpfull. I can pack it in a bow case and ship it ahead!!! I hope all these responces also helps anyone else with this delema.
We went to the Philippines this summer for a month, we shipped the detector with some other luggage in a Forex box ahead of us.On the way back broke it down in our large suitcase with no batteries in it.It went through several countries security with no problems.
Remeber to takethebatteries out and put in seperate bags. Also if you have two detectors you can shipp one to your destination and have it held at the reservations desk if you have a reservation at a hotel or at General Delivery of the shipping company w/ a pick up by date or return to sender date. Don't forget the insurance.

hmmm....interesting idea.
I use a plastic case for a hunting bow. I can fit all of the following gear inside.
MXT with Sun Ray pin pointer
2 extra coils with lower rods (14" x 9" and 4" x 6")
earphones
digging tool with sheath
finds pouch with belt and plastic drop cloth
extra batteries
Operating manual
Hunting case came with egg carton foam sheets for both the top and bottom.
Your milage may vary depending on the particular case you use and which detector you have.
It is recommended that you include the operating manual as proof of what you have. Especially for international travel. If you ship it as baggage you won't have to worry about pre-flight security checks plus any bow case I've seen would be pretty big for carry on.
I have found that this is not the best for taking it out in the field but is excellent for traveling
When I posted this I had no idea it would bring such a responce! A big thanks to all! I'll be heading to Vegas in March, which gives me plenty of time to plan. Since I don't gamble much, I can plan my off days to sweep my pre planned areas. I was always afraid of traveling with a bag or case that looked like it held a firearm and running into trouble missing my flight. WOW DO I HAVE A LOT TO CONSIDER. I know you all have helped me, I sure hope this has helped others in my position!!! Thanks again to all who posted & those still offering suggestions!!!!!!!
