there was no indication that the guide was with the KGC shortly after he was mustered in the army and sent west where he was watched for the reast of his life, he never returned to the east. there was a town they pasted through called rigway that was full of southern sympathisers, and thats where I think the attack came from. as for there cargo it was gold bricks painted black and hid in false bottoms of the wagons
While the government learned to transport money in hidden ways civilians seldom did. Through out the war civilian banks and local governments would ask the military on both sides to provide safe passage for money needing transportation away from the enemy forces. In these cases the money was secured in what ever was handy, loaded on a wagon and escorted along the way by soldiers. Was the Golden Circle active in the area at the time? The guide perhaps was a member and that could explain a lot.
thanks
Hello, I too am from western Pa. and have been searching for this treasure too. and i believe its still there at least part of it any way.
did you read the artical that was in the sunday paper? I think the person who thinks he found it has a screw loose or isnt looking at the facts, he said he found what seen to be a chest that the gold is baried in, cant be the army always transported their gold in false bottoms of the wagons loosly, and i dont think conner had anything to do with the killings or the gold. i think he ran when a fight broke out as the story goes, I also think one of the men had family in the area that helped. how else could one man kill so many people when they all were armed, any way i have been to the same spot and found the traps Parada said he found why would the army be caring traps the always bought there food or humted for it,traps would just get them small animals not anough for so many men. I figure it was a old trapers camp he found. What of the gold? well part of it (one wagon) is probly in a ravine sone where south of that location, why do I say that? because according to the story a pair of mules was found south of there still in military harneses, so if there was gun shots at the camp it would have frighten the mules and they would have run and with the terran the way it is in that part of the country the wagon would have tiped over and the mules would have been free to go any where they wanted. hope this helps keep looking i am
Theres more ways to skin the goverment than saying please
it appears to be a stand off for now. I agree with the statement though that it would seem odd for soldiers to be paid in gold like that. I believe that soldiers normally would be paid in script.
2 million dollars sounds high for a soldiers payroll in the civil war. was it normal for the soldiers to be paid in gold ingots.
Very interesting story. Thanks for posting.

All of these facts are true. when the war started, the value of coins, both gold and silver tripled. War inflation was the same then as now. The government didn't know the answer, so they produced postage stamps too cover the coins that were being hoarded. These boosted the econamy, but failed as a replacment. They stuck too everything they touched, including the envelopes they came in,as they were designed too, causing great problems for the soilders who tryed to send them home. then the government came up with the $1.00 note. untill the civil war, smallest note was the $5.00 greenback. The 1st $1.00 bill was produced during the civil war, and used for union troops payroll. The seconed batch was for the public, witch gave the boost the econamy needed! There were no payrolls of GOLD ! BUT here are the facts as i know them. There was a large amount of money lost at this time,in the dent run area. The union admites this, but will not release details. Union troops were dispatched to gaurd large shipments of gold being transfered from one bank to another to cover the new $1.00 notes. All accounts, both from local papers and folk lore say there was a large amount of money, lost or stolen. It may not have been gold, but then again it might have!
You can clearly see the government response still today. If you prove its union gold, we will get involved! Its the same goverment response we have recieved from honest Abe to JFK. Something was lost,it may have been found, And go get it FINDERSKEEPERS!
