This volume in the Treasure Guide Series, which will eventually cover all fifty of the United States, includes the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The area is exceptionally rich in stories of lost mines and buried treasures. Each state is divided into two sections—treasure sites and metal detector sites. At the end of each listing in both sections is a Map Code reference keyed to the appropriate map in the current issue of the Rand McNally Standard or Commercial Road Atlas. This atlas is easy to carry on the road and can be bought at most book stores at a nominal price. The Map Code reference gives the page number in the atlas, indicates the latitude letter at the right and left of the page, and designates the longitude number at the top and bottom. For example, Map Code 12 D-4 means page 12, latitude D, longitude 4. The approximate location of the site described will be at the intersection of D and 4. With a few exceptions, the highway numbers used here are those listed in the Rand McNally Road Atlas, but highway numbers are sometimes changed, especially as interstate numbers replace those of state or county. Portions of highways are frequently relocated, and new highways are opened from time to time. To be sure about highway numbers, therefore, it is advisable to consult local maps or authorities.
