Lost Ledges of the West

Looking for a lost mine or ledge need not be a hopeless task. The basic premise of this book is that many long-lost mines and ledges were found and could perhaps one day be found again. The criteria for including the story of a given lost ore body in this book was its probable validity. A ledge of high-grade ore does not have to be large to be worth huge amounts of money. A pocket of bonanza gold ore the size of a suitcase can be worth an absolute fortune. It also can remain well hidden over many years in the rough terrain hiding most of the places told about on these pages. Would a rusty old car body be easily found, mostly overgrown with brush, high on some rocky hill? Many a ledge of gold or silver ore, exposed for but a short distance, may not be as large or as obvious as a rusty old car body. The idea of putting maps in to show the areas involved in these tales was resisted. The area can be shown, but no meaningful X can be placed. That would mean the author knows the exact locations. If so, rest assured, he would be out at one point or another, compressor, jack hammer, dynamite, bulldozer, Jeep, truck, and whatever else might expedite the recovery of that long-lost lode. YOU should get maps of the area, every word of the history of the area you can find, and an earful from every local inhabitant of the area, especially the older ones. Maps might have made the book more attractive, but you have with some looking all sorts of USGS, state, county, forestry, BLM, and other maps that are real eye-openers.
