On a cold morning in March 1891, Glenbrook’s Wells Fargo messenger Zeb Walters headed off for Carson City to pick up the monthly payroll for the Glenbrook sawmill. At Carson City Walters secured a strongbox containing 500 double eagles and 200 eagles and moved it by stage to the Flume House at Spooner Station. When Walters reached the Flume House, he found deep snow piling with blizzard conditions at the summit. Walters considered laying over for the night, but decided not to since he was a short distance from home and the remaining leg of his journey would all be by train. He also thought the inclement weather would reduce his risk of being robbed at the end of the line. Walters loaded the strongbox and its $12,000 in gold coin into the caboose, then signaled the conductor to proceed. At a stop on the line Walters moved the strongbox into the tender for security reasons before reaching Glenbrook. The trip was uneventful until the train pulled into Glenbrook.
