This book is as much about freedom as it is about treasure hunting. It takes a person strong enough to be free to seek and recover hidden wealth. How rare and precious a thing is freedom, a greater treasure than the wealth it can bring! How long and hard people must strive against tyrannies in the pursuit of freedom. How quickly freedoms slip away if not vigilantly safeguarded. People often allow themselves to be enslaved and policed for what at first seem to be one good cause or another. For political reasons, for religious reasons, for economic reasons. It always starts with good intentions, and almost unnoticed, freedoms are replaced by shackles. It is popular these days to degrade treasure hunting. Thieves, pirates, desecrates of public heritage, these are some of the kinder phrases used in describing those who seek and sometimes recover lost and hidden wealth. This is said, however, most often by those who hold some kind of job paid for by public funds. Some kind of "public servant" who never has worked for himself. There are a few brave, thoughtful souls who lead lives similar to those of the heroes of this book. Not many. Astonishing stories if they could be told. Such adventurers are quiet about what they do, however, and their silence should surprise nobody. The fact is, there is far more treasure than most people realize. Smaller caches exist by the tens and hundreds of thousands, and the value of some of the larger hoards is mind-boggling. This wealth is never thought of until it becomes known that some person capable of recovering it has done so.
