Excerpt from 'Pilar la Dura, Book Two'Claude tethered the three horses about three tough miles northeast of where he stashed the four sacks of gold ore. He'd packed in two bales of hay and a partial sack of oats from Jay Bentley's ranch. He fed the horses some of the hay and left extra in reach in case he could not return 'as soon as he hoped. He doubted that any of his pursuers had departed the scene in his absence. Claude wanted to check out the situation before bringing the horses closer. Peters approached the area with extreme caution. Woods wise, he realized he was not as young as he once had been. Outnumbered, Claude had no intention of getting into a fire fight or any kind of fight He did not know much about these people, but he knew they were after his gold and didn't mind how they took it from him. Not nice people! His treatment of the man two days earlier would not endear him to them. They were probably angered they had been so far unable to lay their hands upon him. His rifle was ready, he was ready, but he would not use it unless he had to. If these thugs continued to hunt for him, if they still were hunting for him, nature could soon play worse tricks upon them than he had thus far been able to do. There was a feel of coming snow in the air, and snow had come the year before even earlier than this. These mountains often had some terrible winter conditions. If they got caught in a snowstorm up here, he would be delighted. There seemed to be no immediate threat of snow, but for several days the clouds had been gathering to the northwest.
