Dust whirled skyward behind the long wagon train creaking south across the Kansas prairie. It was made up of Missouri men, some with their families, who had struck it rich in the California gold fields. On this day in 1862, they were returning home with their fortunes. The train carried an estimated $100,000 in gold at yesterday's prices.
