If youre looking for a great family spot in North Carolina to find gold and gems, one of the premiere places youll need to visit is Heather Grove (http://www.heathergrovegold.com) in McDowell County in the mountains of western North Carolina. The county covers 436 square miles, and 75 percent of the land is forest, with 67,000 acres located in the Pisgah National Forest.

To get there, take Interstate-40 and exit at Marion, North Caro-lina; then take Highway 221 South to Polly Spout Road. The scenic drive is breathtaking, and the people you meet are just plain friendly!
