Drop out of the foothills on Farm Road 580 just out of Lampasas, Texas, on past Nix, moving toward San Sabaand the great open bottomlands of the Colorado River lie magnificent in their splendor and solitude.

Farther on down the highway turns back sharply to an ancient, narrow, rickety, swaying bridge spanning high above the muddy river that once was crossed here only by ferry.

And on the other side of the river, out of Lampasas County and now into San Saba County, is a new country, a different world, inhabited by rocky bluffs, flat white rocks, pale green scrub bushes and burned-off stumps.
