In the states of Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, where water trans­portation was the principal means of communication and commerce in the early days, many of the real and also the possible ghost towns were located along rivers and bayous. These towns were abandoned when the reason for their existence vanished with the coming of the railroads. Like the Mississippi, some of the rivers in these states frequently changed their courses. In some instances, towns have moved away from eroding river banks "as many as three and four times. Whole towns have disappeared into the water. Some of the possible ghost towns listed may have suffered this fate. I have, however, named only a few sites which are inaccessible.
